Syllabus:
Class No. 1: The Connection
If “it is not good that the man should be alone,” why are so many good Catholic men and women unmarried, despite wanting to be?
In this introductory class, you’ll:
• Meet your instructor and hear her story that led to a great realization about singleness in modern times
• Discover the connection between self-image and literally everything else about us—most notably our ability to have healthy, secure relationships
• Learn the truth about affirmation—why we need it and how it can’t be self-given
Class No. 2: What Is Love?
Do you actually know what love is? Many of us think we “do” love right, but are we loving as we’re called to—and as Jesus shows us in Scripture?
In Class No. 2, we’ll:
• Get to the heart of what love is (and what it is not) and how to do it right in every context
• Introduce the concept of boundaries within love and relationships
• Ask ourselves, am I loving myself as I should?
Class No. 3: Self-Image Formation
Who do you think you are? Whether you read that as a threat or a sincere question, you still may not know the answer. In childhood, you were either formed to know the truth of who you are—or not.
In Class No. 3, we’ll:
• Outline what self-image is and how it is formed, both from a macro and micro perspective
• Discuss the psycho-spiritual reality of human formation through what you’re taught, told, and shown
• See how the Fall influences us today
Class No. 4: Complex Trauma
Ready for the ultimate red pill? It’s understanding complex trauma—what it is, how it happens, and why it’s so insidious.
In Class No. 4, we’ll:
• Go deep on complex trauma, revealing what it is and how it’s different from simple trauma (aka PTSD)
• Discuss the four primary causes
• Reveal why complex trauma is the root cause of our misprogramming
Class No. 5: The Brain
How does God’s great intellectual gift—the magnificent human brain—get so disordered? In part, it’s by its very design.
In Class No. 5, we’ll:
• Outline the parts and states of the brain and how they developed
• Make the connection between complex trauma and disordered behavior, both big (i.e., criminal) and small (i.e., quirks)
• Learn how our brain gets disordered in its efforts to protect us
Class No. 6: Neuroscience
Now that we understand how trauma affects the brain, can we trust our thoughts? Not without first “taking every thought captive to obey Christ.”
In Class No. 6, we’ll shift from problem to solution as we:
• Explain how the brain can fix itself
• Define terms like neuroplasticity and reticular activating system, which help us understand how to rewire the brain
• Discuss a form of CBT called situational strategy to help “take every thought captive”
Class No. 7: Self-Knowledge & Self-Improvement
Ready to become who you were meant to be? It all starts with self-knowledge and the pursuit of personal, interior improvement.
In Class No. 7, we’ll:
• Return to the topic of self-image, sharing ways to grow and improve on the inside to become who you were designed to be
• Share powerful spiritual actions to take while you’re single to prepare for a healthy, God-prioritized relationship
• Outline steps to take to achieve wholeness
Class No. 8: Self-Maximization
Are you a master of yourself? Becoming self-mastered means transforming yourself both internally and externally.
In our final class, we’ll:
• Learn how to make effective use of a season of singleness
• Share tips for enhancing outward beauty and actionable ways to skill up around dating
• Suggest real ways to challenge your current state to become the spouse your future spouse will love
